Primary pupils, staff and parents get a gold star from inspectors

  • Interaction between staff, pupils and parents at North Queensferry Primary was praised in the HMiE inspectors report

North Queensferry Primary pupils and parents have been praised in a report by HMIe inspectors - who marked out interaction between staff and parents to be a major strength of the school.

The joint working in the school's kitchen garden was particularly chosen as a good example of best practice. Inspectors also highlighted the school's "well-behaved, confident children who enjoy school and are eager to learn," as well as the children's wider achievements. They also noted all staff are committed to school improvement and teamwork is strong."

Attention was paid to the encouragement given to all pupils to become involved in the wider school community. Inspectors said: "Children in the nursery and primary classes are developing a strong sense of community and respect for others. Many serve well on committees such as the eco committee or work as house captains.

The report also praised the number of children who have gained new skills through popular out-of-school hours activities like the gardening club. Children have developed an awareness of good citizenship through taking part in local events.

This is supported by the encouragement given to parents to become involved with the school. "Staff welcome parents into the school and nursery class to support their children's learning. Many parents help in the library, at the breakfast club or with other out-of-school hours activities."

The inspectors also noted the supportive Parent Council and the effective information given to parents through newsletter and children's personal learning plans.

Inspectors were pleased with the work of the headteacher and staff describing them as a good team and saying : "the headteacher is clear that she wants children to achieve and be good citizens and her commitment to the school is evident. She is highly respected by staff and has gained the trust of almost all parents."

Inspectors also noted expectations of behaviour are high, children feel safe and staff look after them well. Almost all children treat each other with respect. They value opportunities to celebrate their achievements through a variety of class awards and whole school awards at assemblies. Children are proud to be the 'weekly star writer' or 'class hero'.

Head Teacher Sally Hourston said: "We are pleased to receive a good report from HMIe and are delighted that our Kitchen Garden project has been identified as an example of good practice. We enjoy very strong working relationships with our parents and members of our community and it is great to see this work being recognised by the inspection team."

The only areas marked out for improvement by the inspectors are to ensure tasks consistently extend children's thinking and enable them to work at an appropriate pace, and to ensure rigorous self-evaluation for school improvement.

Congratulations to all on a great report! What do you think? Have your say and post your comments on s1northqueensferry
